Marquise Engagement Rings

Maximum presence, point to point.

The marquise — also called a navette, French for “little boat” — is an elongated shape with two pointed ends and a curved body. Its claim to fame is geometry: of all the shapes, the marquise has the largest surface area for its carat weight, so it looks the biggest on the hand. Regal, vintage and unmistakable, it’s the shape for maximum drama.

This guide covers why the marquise wears so large, its length-to-width ratio, protecting the points, and why symmetry matters more here than anywhere.

The shape that wears the largest

Because its weight is spread across a long, narrow outline, a marquise looks larger face-up than any other shape of the same carat — and its two points stretch the finger into a long, elegant line. At Montare’s 3-carat floor, that translates into striking presence.

Length-to-width ratio

The classic marquise ratio runs 1.85–2.10:

Ratio Look
1.75–1.85 Fuller, rounder navette
2.00 (≈) Classic, balanced (ideal)
2.10+ Very slender, dramatic

Bowtie and protecting the points

A marquise shows a bowtie like other elongated brilliants — minimised by our ideal-proportion cutting. The two points are delicate, so both are protected with V-prongs as standard.

Why symmetry matters most here

With two points that must align perfectly, symmetry is everything on a marquise — any misalignment is obvious at a glance. Our Triple Excellent standard includes excellent symmetry, so the points sit in a perfect mirror.

Best settings for a marquise

A solitaire with V-prongs is timeless; a three-stone or east-west marquise leans modern; a vintage-inspired setting plays to its regal heritage. Compare it with the other shapes in our diamond shapes guide, or preview it to scale in the ring builder.

Every Montare engagement ring is held to our floor, not a premium upgrade:
  • 3 carat minimum centre stone
  • D–E colour & VVS1–VVS2 clarity

Marquise engagement ring FAQs

Does a marquise diamond look bigger than other shapes?

Yes. The marquise has the largest surface area per carat of any shape, so it looks the biggest face-up and its points lengthen the finger. At a 3-carat floor, the presence is dramatic.

What is the best length-to-width ratio for a marquise?

Around 1.85 to 2.10, with about 2.0 considered the classic, balanced navette. Lower ratios look fuller; higher ratios look more slender.

Are marquise diamonds durable?

The body is durable, but the two points are the most vulnerable spots. V-prongs protect them from chipping — Montare sets every marquise with V-prongs as standard.

Why is symmetry important on a marquise?

Its two points must mirror each other exactly, or the stone looks lopsided. A high symmetry grade keeps them aligned — every Montare marquise is Triple Excellent, including excellent symmetry.
