Pear-Shaped Engagement Rings
A teardrop — brilliant facets meeting a single graceful point.
The pear shape, or teardrop, is a hybrid of the round brilliant and the marquise: a rounded end that tapers to a single elegant point. It is distinctive, romantic, and quietly flattering — the point and elongated body lengthen and slim the finger more than almost any other shape.
This guide covers which way to wear a pear, its length-to-width ratio, the bowtie and the point, and the settings that suit it.
Which way do you wear it?
A pear is traditionally worn with the point facing the fingertip (toward the nail), which maximises the finger-lengthening effect. It’s your ring, though — some prefer the point toward the hand. Either is correct.
Length-to-width ratio
Pears range widely, so the ratio is where you set the mood:
| Ratio | Look |
|---|---|
| 1.40–1.45 | Fuller, rounder teardrop |
| 1.45–1.55 | Classic, balanced (most popular) |
| 1.55–1.75 | Long, slender, dramatic |
The bowtie and the point
Like ovals and marquises, pears carry a faint bowtie shadow across the centre — minimised by precise cutting, which our Triple Excellent standard ensures. The single point is the most vulnerable spot on the stone, so it’s best protected by a V-prong (more below).
Best settings for a pear
A solitaire with a V-prong cradling the point is the classic; a hidden halo adds sparkle and shields the tip; an east-west pear is a modern statement. Compare it with the other shapes in our diamond shapes guide, or preview it to scale in the ring builder.
- 3 carat minimum centre stone
- D–E colour & VVS1–VVS2 clarity
- Triple Excellent cut with ideal table & depth

Which way do you wear a pear-shaped ring?
Traditionally with the point facing toward the fingertip, which lengthens and slims the finger. Some wear the point toward the hand — both are perfectly acceptable; it’s personal preference.
Do pear-shaped diamonds have a bowtie?
Yes, like other elongated brilliant cuts, pears have a faint dark bowtie across the centre. Precise cutting minimises it; Montare pears are Triple Excellent with ideal proportions to keep it faint.
How is the point of a pear protected?
With a V-prong — a chevron-shaped prong that cradles and shields the point, the most vulnerable part of the stone, from chipping. We set every pear this way by default.
What length-to-width ratio is best for a pear?
About 1.45–1.55 for a classic balanced teardrop, or 1.55–1.75 for a longer, more dramatic look. It’s a matter of taste.
