Fluorescence is a soft glow — usually blue — that some diamonds give off under ultraviolet light. Around a quarter to a third of diamonds have some, and in everyday lighting you would never notice. For most buyers it is a non-issue, and occasionally a small source of value. Here is what to know.

What is fluorescence?
Some diamonds contain trace elements that react to ultraviolet light — in sunlight or a club's UV lamp — by emitting a gentle glow, almost always blue. It is a natural characteristic, noted on the certificate, and it has nothing to do with a diamond being real or not (both mined and lab-grown can show it).

For the vast majority of stones, no. Independent studies have found fluorescence has no general effect on how a diamond looks in normal lighting. Two nuances: in lower colour grades (think I–M), blue fluorescence can actually counter a faint yellow tint and make the stone look a touch whiter — a small bonus. And in rare cases, very strong fluorescence can give a stone a slightly hazy or milky appearance, which is the only situation to avoid.
Fluorescence and price
Because of an old market wariness, faintly to medium fluorescent stones sometimes sell for a little less than non-fluorescent equivalents — with no visible difference. For a savvy buyer, that can be quiet value. The exception is paying a discount for very strong fluorescence that does cause haze; that is the one to skip.
