Fluorescence is a soft glow — usually blue — that some diamonds give off under ultraviolet light. Around a quarter to a third of diamonds have some, and in everyday lighting you would never notice. For most buyers it is a non-issue, and occasionally a small source of value. Here is what to know.

What is fluorescence?
Some diamonds contain trace elements that react to ultraviolet light — in sunlight or a club's UV lamp — by emitting a gentle glow, almost always blue. It is a natural characteristic, noted on the certificate, and it has nothing to do with a diamond being real or not (both mined and lab-grown can show it). Blue fluorescence specifically comes from what gemologists call the N3 centre: a cluster of three nitrogen atoms arranged in the diamond's crystal lattice, left over from how the stone formed. When UV light hits that structure, it re-emits some of the energy as visible blue light.

Fluorescence isn't always blue
Blue is by far the most common fluorescence colour — it accounts for roughly 97% of diamonds that fluoresce a noticeable colour. A small remainder fluoresce yellow, white, green or orange instead. These non-blue colours are graded the same way (None to Very Strong) but are rarer and generally viewed more cautiously by graders, since the research behind fluorescence's effect on appearance has focused almost entirely on the blue variety.

The reassurance that fluorescence is mostly a non-issue is not a marketing claim — it comes from a landmark GIA study (Moses et al., 1997) that examined more than 22,000 diamonds. Among the diamonds that fluoresced a visible colour, 97% fluoresced blue. The study found that blue fluorescence had little to no effect on a diamond's colour appearance or transparency, except in extremely rare "overblue" cases where very strong fluorescence gives a stone a hazy or oily look. That rare exception is the one scenario worth actually checking for in person; everything short of it behaves as advertised.
Does fluorescence matter?
For the vast majority of stones, no. Independent studies have found fluorescence has no general effect on how a diamond looks in normal lighting. Two nuances: in lower colour grades (think I–M), blue fluorescence can actually counter a faint yellow tint and make the stone look a touch whiter — a small bonus. And in rare cases, very strong fluorescence can give a stone a slightly hazy or milky appearance, which is the only situation to avoid.
Fluorescence and price
Because of an old market wariness, faintly to medium fluorescent stones sometimes sell for a little less than non-fluorescent equivalents — with no visible difference. For a savvy buyer, that can be quiet value. The exception is paying a discount for very strong fluorescence that does cause haze; that is the one to skip.
