Why Three Carats: The Montare Floor

Why Three Carats: The Montare Floor

Three carats is the smallest diamond Montare will set into an engagement ring. Below that, it is special-order only. The reasoning is visual, not marketing — here it is.

Key takeaways

  • A 3-carat round brilliant is about 9.4mm across — the point a stone reads as the stone.
  • The jump from 2 to 3 carats is where presence on the hand changes.
  • The industry sells smaller for margin reasons, not taste.
  • Lab-grown is what makes a 3-carat floor attainable at a high grade.
  • The minimum applies to the centre stone, not the whole ring.

How big is a 3-carat diamond?

Carat is weight, but here is roughly how each reads face-up in a round brilliant:

Carat Approx. diameter How it reads
1 ct ~6.5 mm ‘there is a stone there’
2 ct ~8.2 mm present, but modest
3 ct ~9.4 mm the stone
4 ct ~10.4 mm a statement

Carat is weight, so size scales slower than weight — more on that in the 4Cs explained.

Why the industry sells smaller

Most retail engagement rings sit between 0.7 and 1.5 carats. That is not what buyers wanted — it is what the unit economics of mined-diamond retail demand. The cost basis of a 1-carat mined diamond at typical retail clarity is similar to a 3-carat lab-grown diamond at our floor, so retailers anchor to the smaller stone to protect margin. Lab-grown rewrote that maths; we pass it through without lowering the standard. The full breakdown is in what an $11,000 ring is really charging you for.

What we will not do

We will not list 1- or 2-carat rings to broaden the funnel. The brand is built on the floor. If you want a smaller stone, we will say so honestly and point you elsewhere — we would rather lose the sale than dilute the line.

The exception

For some side-stone and three-stone settings, the centre stone begins at 3 carats with smaller accent stones around it. The minimum applies to the centre stone, not the entire ring — see our guide to settings.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a 3-carat diamond?

A 3-carat round brilliant is roughly 9.4mm across the top — large and clearly present on an average ring finger without looking oversized.

Is 3 carats too big for an engagement ring?

It reads as a confident centre stone, not a novelty. Elongated shapes at 3 carats look especially refined and elongate the finger.

Why does Montare have a 3-carat minimum?

Because below 3 carats a stone starts to read tentative on most hands, and lab-grown makes a 3-carat floor genuinely attainable at a high grade.

Can I order a smaller diamond?

Smaller centre stones are special-order only; the standard line begins at 3 carats.
