Shape is the first decision and the hardest to reverse. Setting, metal and carat can all be discussed away; shape is the silhouette. Here is what each one does — and how to choose.

Key takeaways

  • Round is the most brilliant and most forgiving — choose it if you are unsure.
  • Elongated shapes (oval, pear, marquise) look larger per carat and flatter the finger.
  • Step cuts (emerald, asscher) are elegant but show inclusions — buy high clarity.
  • Shape is separate from setting — the same stone can look classic or bold depending on the mount.

Round brilliant

The benchmark — 58 facets engineered to return the maximum light to the eye, and the most forgiving shape on any hand. About 60% of engagement rings are round. If you are uncertain, choose round.

Oval

Elongates the finger and reads larger than a round of the same weight. Watch for the bow-tie (a dark band across the centre from cut depth) — every Montare oval is hand-selected to avoid it.

Cushion

A square with softened corners and pillowy facets. Romantic and vintage-feeling; holds light beautifully under candlelight, and pairs especially well with halos.

Emerald

Step-cut, not brilliant-cut — a hall of mirrors rather than fiery scintillation. Its open facets reveal inclusions, so it demands high clarity. VVS only.

Every centre diamond is Triple Excellent, D–E, VVS and at least three carats — the hard calls are made for you.

Design your ring

Pear

A teardrop; wear the point toward the fingertip to elongate. Reads larger than a round of the same weight and suits long, slender fingers.

Marquise

Two points, the longest-looking shape per carat — maximum size impact. A statement, not a default.

Radiant

A brilliant-cut rectangle — the silhouette of an emerald with the fire of a round. Trimmed corners protect it in everyday wear.

Shape is not setting

Once you have a shape, the setting decides the personality — solitaire, halo, hidden halo, cathedral, three-stone and more. See our guide to settings, and remember that cut quality matters more than shape for sparkle (why Triple Excellent matters).

Frequently asked questions

Which diamond shape looks the biggest?

Elongated shapes — marquise, pear and oval — look largest for their carat weight because they spread the surface area. Marquise has the largest face-up size per carat.

What is the most popular engagement ring shape?

Round brilliant, at roughly 60% of engagement rings — it returns the most light and suits every hand.

Which shapes need the highest clarity?

Step cuts like emerald and asscher, where open facets reveal inclusions. Montare's VVS floor means this is never a concern.

Does shape affect price?

Yes — round commands a premium for its cutting yield, while many fancy shapes give more size per carat for the budget.
