A diamond ring loses its sparkle not because the diamond dulls — it cannot — but because a film of skin oil, lotion and dust builds up underneath it. The fix takes five minutes at home. Here is how to keep your ring brilliant, and how to protect the setting for a lifetime.
Key takeaways
- Clean with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush — nothing harsher.
- A quick clean every week or two keeps it bright.
- Avoid chlorine, abrasives and harsh chemicals, which attack the metal, not the diamond.
- Take the ring off for the gym, cleaning, swimming and gardening.
- Have the setting checked periodically so prongs stay secure.
Why rings go dull
The diamond is the hardest material there is — it will not scratch or cloud. What dims a ring is the oils from your skin, hand cream and everyday grime collecting under the stone and in the gallery, blocking light from entering and returning. Clean that film away and the brilliance comes straight back.
The safe at-home clean
- Soak the ring for 15–20 minutes in a bowl of warm (not hot) water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
- Gently brush the stone, the back of the setting and the gallery with a soft toothbrush — the underside of the diamond is where the film hides.
- Rinse in clean water (over a bowl, not an open drain).
- Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Every centre diamond is Triple Excellent, D–E, VVS and at least three carats — the hard calls are made for you.
Design your ringWhat to avoid
- Chlorine and bleach — they can pit and weaken gold and platinum alloys.
- Abrasives — toothpaste, baking soda and scouring pads can scratch the metal.
- Harsh household chemicals — remove your ring before cleaning.
- Ultrasonic cleaners at home — generally fine for solitaires but best left to a jeweller for rings with many small pavé stones, which can loosen.
Everyday habits that protect it
Take the ring off for the gym (weights can bend a band), swimming (chlorine, and cold water shrinks fingers so rings slip), gardening, and deep cleaning. Apply lotion and perfume before putting it on. Store it on its own — a diamond can scratch other jewellery, and softer stones — in a soft pouch or a lined box.
When to have it checked
Once or twice a year, have a jeweller inspect the prongs and setting. Daily wear can, over years, thin prongs — and a quick tightening prevents the only real risk, a loosened stone. (This is also where setting choice matters: a bezel is the most secure for active hands, and platinum prongs last longest — see platinum vs white gold.)

How often should I clean my diamond ring?
A quick warm-water-and-soap clean every week or two keeps it bright; a deeper soak whenever it looks dull.
Can I clean my ring with dish soap?
Yes — a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water with a soft brush is the safest and most effective home method.
Is toothpaste safe for cleaning a ring?
No. Toothpaste is mildly abrasive and can scratch the metal. Use mild dish soap and water instead.
Are ultrasonic cleaners safe for diamond rings?
They are generally fine for plain solitaires but can loosen small pavé stones over time, so have pavé or delicate settings cleaned professionally.
